PERSONALITY DISORDER
Personality disorder is a very common type of mental imbalance in the world today. Research that about 20% of adults are victims of personality disorder. Although, the many of its signs are seen as normal and as such overlooked. However, it has a tendency to become worse if not attention is not paid.
Otherwise known as character disorder, personality disorder is a type of disorder in which a person behaves in a manner that is socially and emotionally improper. Whilst the traits of personality disorder (PD) is flexible in most people, it can be unworkable in someone with PD and can create wrong patterns and lifetime problems. In developed countries, like the US, PD is seen as a serious mental disorder and people with PDs are treated by medical professionals.
Personality Disorders can be grouped into three clusters.
Cluster A: In this cluster is personality disorders which are categorized by odd and eccentric thinking a behavior. There are three types of disorder under this cluster.
1. Paranoid Personality Disorder:
• Lack of trust in people
• Unnecessarily suspicious of others.
• Think that the people around have wants to harm you.
• Hostility is your response to innocent jokes, as they may perceive jokes as insults.
2. Schizoid Personality Disorder:
• Lack of interest in relationships and social activities.
• Difficulty to understand general signs and symbols.
• Attitude towards others is most times cold and indifferent.
3. Schizotypal Personality Disorder:
• Frequently hear whispers of your name when no one is actually calling.
• Never comfortable with close relationships as you are always suspicious.
• Believe that you have special powers.
• Assume that you can control others.
Cluster B: This cluster is categorized by excessive expression of emotions and drama. There are four types of disorder under this cluster.
1. Antisocial Personal Disorder:
• Show little or no concern about the emotions of others
• Does not regard rules and regulations.
• More impulsive than logical, so they get into trouble a lot.
• Tend to be violent and hostile.
2. Borderline Personality Disorder:
• Feeling of emptiness and dreads being alone.
• Just as your emotions are extreme and unstable, so are your relationships.
• Freaks out when stressed
• Prone to suicidal thoughts and self injuries.
3. Histrionic Personality Disorder:
• Excessive attention seekers
• Easily influenced by others
• Shallow reasoning and talks without facts like they know it all.
• Extremely concerned about physical looks and tend to force themselves on others.
4. Narcissist Personality Disorder:
• Crave to be worshipped by everyone
• Feel more special than others.
• Plagued by an entitlement mentality that makes them place unreasonable demands on others.
• Very arrogant and boastful.
Cluster C: This cluster is characterized based on fear and anxious thinking. There are three types of disorder under this cluster.
1. Avoidant Personality Disorder:
• Hypersensitive to criticisms and rejection.
• Always scared of disapproval
• Feel terrible about themselves (extremely low self esteem)
• Timidity, both publicly and privately.
2. Dependent Personality Disorder:
• Extremely dependent on others
• Clingy and find it difficult to be alone
• Get into relationships because of loneliness
• Tendency to tolerate abusive treatment from others because of fear
3. Obsessive-compulsive Personality Disorder:
• Very rigid thought pattern and beliefs
• Extreme perfectionists who always want to be in control
• Excessively concerned with rules and details
• Clings to spoilt and worthless items.
All of these personality disorders, if not properly handled, may result in depression and other negative effects that will be detrimental to the life of the victim.
